Information Regarding FAA test of Piston-powered IFR Departure Procedures

Between December 2009 and June 8, 2010, the FAA conducted a test of a proposed change in procedures for small single-engine aircraft departing from the Santa Monica Airport.

The FAA regulates aircraft operations and use of the nation’s airspace.  During the test period, single-engine aircraft were being directed to turn and fly in the general direction of the Santa Monica Pier immediately after departure.  The test was to determine if this change in procedure will reduce operational impacts and aircraft idling time at both SMO and LAX airports.

Below is more helpful information for residents regarding the test.
