Share a Bag Program

An exchange for durable reusable bags in the community.

The idea is simple enough. If you have extra reusable bags, leave them at one of the 20 Share A Bag Program locations.

These include all four Santa Monica Farmers Markets, participating local resale merchants (secondhand stores, vintage stores, resale boutiques, thrift shops, charity shops and consignment shops), Santa Monica Place, plus Sustainable Works, the Downtown Ambassador’s Desk, the Chamber of Commerce, and City Hall. If you need a bag, you can pick one up free of charge at any of the same locations.

As of September 1, 2011, new restrictions on the distribution of single-use plastic and paper carryout shopping bags in Santa Monica are in effect. To provide a service for the community and to meet the increased demand for reusable bags, Santa Monica is proud to inaugurate the Share A Bag Program.

Retailers Donating Reusable Bags to Share A Bag Program

The next time you see a shopper with a distinctive "I'm a Santa Monica Local" reusable bag, you may be in the presence of a Share A Bag Program participant.

Whole Foods Market has joined in the effort to make the transition to reusable bags a success with a significant donation of bags to the Share A Bag program. What's more, Whole Foods partnered with GreenVetsLA to produce these sturdy reusables, all made locally from reclaimed fabric otherwise destined for the landfill.

Other organizations that have donated to the Share A Bag Program include Santa Monica Place, the City's Resource Recovery and Recycling Division, 99¢ Only Stores, and St. Matthew's Episcopal Church.
