Green Your Commute Tax-Free in 2011

The recently passed federal tax bill extended the Qualified Transportation Fringe Benefit so employers may continue to provide workers with up to $230 per month in tax-free transit and vanpool benefits in 2011. Employers can allow employees to use pretax dollars to pay for transit passes, vanpool fares and parking. Employees also can be reimbursed up to $20 per month for biking to work. Tax-free Green Commute benefits are a win-win: employees enjoy a healthier, less stressful commute and businesses save on payroll taxes and free up valuable parking space. More info: metro.net

Employers that want to do more to encourage Green Commuting may contact the City of Santa Monica’s Transportation Management Office at 310.458.8956 for information and assistance.

Are You Plug-in Ready?

The electical utility serving Santa Monica, Southern California Edison, has a library of resources to help consumers Get Ready to Plug-In.

The prevailing wisdom from pundits in the "green media" is that California will play a leading role ushering in widespread adoption of electric cars in the United States and abroad. So for all early-adopters and those in the vanguard of the environmentally responsible, this is a great time to lead by example.

Many of our environmental challenges are related to transportation. The transportation related decisions that we make as individuals have local and global environmental implications.  Alternatives like riding public transportation, an electric skateboard, or bicycles to work or school reduces traffic, improves air & water quality and can save you money.

Santa Monica is committed to offering premium transit alternatives in the Big Blue Bus and the Tide Shuttle or bike paths, and clean vehicle information.  Further, Santa Monica is setting important goals for a sustainable future.
