The City recognizes the need to provide housing to the special needs segments of the population. Historically, the private housing market has found it difficult to address the specific needs of particular groups, such as families, seniors, the disabled and others.

This year, the Housing and Redevelopment Division designated 19 units of existing housing at the Ocean Park Community Center to
permanent housing for 100-300 chronically homeless women who occupy Santa Monica’s streets on a daily basis.  Further investment by the Housing and Redevelopment Division will provide for 20 new units for seniors and 4 rehabilitated units for families in the near term, demonstrating tangible progress in provision of affordable housing for special needs populations.

In addition, the
Village at the Civic Center, in downtown Santa Monica will be a large, residential development having at least 160 units of affordable housing, some set aside for families.  This development is in the planning process, and shows another solution to providing housing for underserved populations.
